Designed by architect Douglas D. Stone the Hotel Adagio building was inspired by Spanish colonial revival architecture and opened as the El Cortez Hotel in 1929. Owner Mortimer A. Samuel was a prosperous businessman who owned and operated several other hotels in San Francisco and hoped this fifteen-story hotel would be, “a home of luxury and comfort.” Today, Hotel Adagio continues this commitment to hospitality with a new level of warmth, service and sophistication in the heart of the City by the Bay.
